В финале вылепил волосы, бороду и брови. Естественно не без помощи. 3D-МОДЕЛИРОВАНИЕ Как то я решил попробовать 3d скульптуру. Очень понравилась кошка Sphynx. Она меня привлекла своими складками и формами.

Я использовал приложение Pixologic Sculptris Alpha 6. Вот как-то так. Or how long it will take you before you can make your first 3D model? And what you should do when you are staring at a blank screen with no idea what to do next? We talked to Jonathan Williamson from CG Cookie, one of the leading digital art education sites, about the challenges and rewards of the trade and his insider tips for someone who is totally new to the world of 3D. Jonathan, you are a professional 3D modeler with years of experience. For somebody who is thinking of getting into 3D, why do you think they should do it in the first place? Doesn’t the world have enough 3D modelers already? Jonathan: Absolutely not.

3D modeling is omnipresent in today’s world and it is only going to grow as a sought-after skill. To put things in context: 75% of the IKEA catalogue is now done in 3D. We all know that Facebook bought the Oculus Rift for billions of dollars, you know they are going to have to get plans for growing that sector. If virtual reality keeps on growing, it is going to have a much larger impact on people’s everyday lives. And of course, the objects of virtual reality all start as 3D models.

Next, consider architectural visualization; if you have a house renovation project or want to design a house completely, you can absolutely use 3D modeling for that. If you want to get started in 3D printing, whether that is designing toys, tools or anything, that is 3D modeling. It all starts with a model. 3D is getting to be more involved in so many different areas, everything from development of films, virtual reality, scientific research, to special design. It is touching hundreds of industries right now.

If you want to get into a lot of research, visualization, medical design, much of that is 3D modeling. In short – the world needs 3D modelers! Sounds great. So now you have convinced me to get started – but what do I need as a prerequisite? Is it a field that is open to absolutely anybody? Jonathan: To get started in 3D modeling, you have to have a passion for the computer: that is without a doubt. You will be spending a lot of time working digitally and if you do not like working on a computer, 3D modeling is probably not your thing.

If, however, you really enjoy the computer, have an idea for something that you want to integrate either with the real world or completely virtually, then 3D modeling may be it. For the most part, this interest or passion is the only prerequisite you will need.

One thing that is not essential but will absolutely benefit you is a good sense of spatial awareness. If you are one of those people who can visualize an object in front of you, a real world object – a peanut butter jar, can opener, car key or a wallet – you can spin it around in your mind and know exactly what it looks like, 3D modeling will probably be a good fit for you. That is essentially what you will be doing every single day. If you find that kind of spatial visualization challenging, 3D modeling will most likely be more difficult for you. It of course depends to what degree you are modeling, but some modeling is going to be strictly from existing blueprints.

You are good to go as long as you have a computer and a good sense of spatial awareness and beyond that, just the need and urge to learn. I believe that anyone can learn modeling. It is a bit technical, but it does not have to be technical in terms of computer science. There are a lot of people who are very successful modelers and are absolutely on the artistic side rather than the technical side of the spectrum.

Jonathan: The next step would definitely be software. Most computers do not come with the software needed for 3D modeling.

However, the software is starting to matter less and less as far as what you choose, it is much more up to one’s individual resources and personal preference. At this point, all of the main software packages are so close to being on the same level that it is really quite irrelevant. It almost does not matter if you choose Blender, 3ds Max or Maya; all of these tools are very capable in enabling you to do things you could have never done before. What is your personal recommendation?

Jonathan: Keeping in mind how similar the 3D software packages have become, I think Blender makes a very good choice especially for new artists, for a few reasons. One of the primary reasons is that there is no barrier to entry.

Blender can basically run on any machine. If you only have access to a computer that is a few years old now, it will still work. Blender is very compatible and small.

To give an even more extreme example, if you don’t have a computer at home, you can simply put Blender on a flash drive and go to your public library or any other place that has a public computer. You can take Blender with you anywhere you go without the need for access dongles, license keys, or anything else of the sort. Also, Blender is built by the community and anyone can become involved. If you are an artist and you want to have input in making the software even better, you can do that and if the changes are good, they might be applied to future releases. If you are a computer science student and you want to start developing on Blender or if you are building a data visualization tool, you can integrate it directly in Blender without having to build the whole foundation, just leverage Blender.

And of course, it is completely open-source, so the software is free and there’s no usage restrictions on anything you create. This is important because one of the issues that young artists may run into if they learn 3D modeling at school is getting a free student license which, as soon as you leave school, can no longer be used for commercial work.

You have spent four years and thousands of dollars on your education, and you are most likely in no place to spend another few thousand dollars on a software license. Yet, the software that you just learned requires you to buy a license! So what kind of position are you in to start doing professional work while still paying back student loans? With Blender, there is no license to worry about and you can use it for commercial purposes without restriction. Any work created in Blender can be sold, adapted and distributed. So for a new artist that is just trying to get their feet on the ground in their professional work, Blender makes great sense.

Your start-up costs are your time; that is about it. Another point is the community spirit of Blender. It is developed by Blender users and the community and I think that resonates with a lot of people. There is a very strong vibrant community behind Blender from people of all walks of life, different skillsets, there are different artists and researchers, you name it, so that side is very fun.

Airplane-3d-model-comic-style Sounds like a no-brainer. But regardless of the software, I decide to go with in the end, where do I find resources as a new 3D modeler? Jonathan: Again, that depends on the software that you choose. If you are choosing Blender, then CG Cookie might be a good place to start. Or it may be YouTube for SketchUp or 3ds Max.

There are a lot of different resources and honestly, if you are just getting started, Google is probably your friend. There are a lot of different educational sites out there and which one you choose depends on your area of focus. Of course, because I’m biased towards CG Cookie, that is the one I will recommend over the others if your software of choice is Blender. We have a free “Blender Basics” course that I personally created for total Blender beginners and I can very confidently recommend that as a great starting point. It will get you up to speed in under 45 minutes.

Do you recommend looking for education based primarily on your area of focus? Jonathan: Absolutely, one of the things that makes 3D software a little daunting to learn is that they are really complex and nearly unlimited in what they can do. At this point, Blender and similar competitors are so big that basically no one person knows all of it. I do not think there is a single person on planet Earth that knows every single piece of Blender. There are many people, including myself, that try to get at least a general understanding of all areas, but we do not know it fully. There are now a lot of niche sites popping up that are focused on using their software of choice in a very particular industry, whether that is Blender with 3D printing or using Blender for architectural visualization or for data science. In this case, Google will be your friend to find those niches.

How long will it take me before I can really turn my idea into a 3D model? Jonathan: That depends almost entirely on you.

Through CG Cookie, I have seen people do it in as little as a day and a half, to as long as a year. It is really up to the individual how much time they want to spend doing it. There are some people who want to absorb as much knowledge as they can and choose not to apply it until they have a good sense of understanding. Then there are some who are just eager to get started and may actually get started too quickly – but that is OK too because they are getting their hands dirty even if they do not know what they are doing just yet. For me personally, keeping in mind that there was no training material when I started, it was a good couple of months before I really felt like I could do something, creating an idea I had. As long as you are taking advantage of the material that is now available, whether it is free tutorials, YouTube or CG Cookie, you should definitely be able to start creating and visualizing your ideas, regardless of how good they come out, in a few days or less. What is your recommended approach to learning?

Do you sit back and absorb the theory first, or just dive into modeling headfirst? Jonathan: I prefer a mixture. When I am learning a new skill, say programming or sculpting, I prefer to sit back and watch and then get my hands dirty. First watch and then dive in. I jump back and forth by trying to completely absorb small things, sections and segments of a material and apply that, then learn another section and apply that. But I do not necessarily know what it is I want to create. I just want to learn. What do you think would be the best thing to start with? Should it be a cube, a chess piece or something else entirely?

Jonathan: Haha, the old “blank slate” situation! Well, in this case what matters is not what you make as long as you make something. You might have learned some of the basic skills, you kind of know what you are doing and you want to create something. You open up your software and you have a blank screen. I think this is where tutorials become really useful. Not necessarily for the sake of learning new skills, but for explaining what you are actually doing and things you do not need to worry about.

So if you are having the blank slate issue, go watch a tutorial and just follow along with it because that is actually going to get you working. You will be applying what you are learning in the software, learning different tools, learning how it works. If you do that enough, one day you will find that you just start creating without even having to worry about the blank slate this time. We will take a look at 10 essential tips and tricks to create clean, smooth, watertight, high-quality models that are ready for 3D printing. 1: Size Settings and Scaling Some simple clicks before you get started will make your life much easier: you may want to set your Project Settings to millimeters. This way, you won’t need to re-scale the printing size of your model later. Go to Edit – Project Setting and set Project Scale to 1 millimeter. It also makes sense to change your general preferences in Cinema 4D to millimeters. For doing so, go to General Preferences – Units – Change Unit Display and choose Millimeters 2: Disable Phong Shading Cinema 4D uses Phong Shading to make an object look perfectly smooth on your screen. Even though circles, spheres or other round shapes might look perfectly smooth in Cinema 4D, they are actually made of square polygons. This is the “real” shape of the object that a printer will use.

In order to see the polygons, you need to select all the Phong Tags on your objects and delete them. Cinema-4d-phong-shading Phong Shading on (top) vs.

3: Increase Segments – Smoothening Your Model In order to avoid a pixelated 3D print, it might make sense to increase the number of Segments. To do so, select your objects and adjust the Segments counter. In the example below, we increased it from 24 (left) to 96 (right).

As you can see, the higher value leads to a much smoother surface. Finding the perfect value depends on the printing size and material you have in mind. Just a word of advice: you don’t need to go over the top with this.

There is no need for polygons smaller than 0.01 millimeters because 3D printers currently cannot print beyond this level of detail. Cinema-4d-segments-smoothen 24 segments (left) vs.

96 segments (right). 4: Section View – Looking Inside Your Model While your 3D model might look stunning from the outside, the inside is a whole different story. Intersections and walls within your design can make your life difficult since your model needs to have one continuous ‘outer shell’ and no other internal structures. The best way to get a better understanding of this is by looking into your model. Go to Edit – Project Settings and change the options for View Clipping. Increasing this setting and changing the zoom will give you the cross section view that suits your need best.

The screenshot below by Nick Lievendag shows that there is a problem with his model. Several objects were “connected” together, which led them to overlap in the interior of the model. Unfortunately, a 3D printer might process such a model incorrectly. But there’s a simple solution (see next step). Cinema-4d-3d-printing-tutorial The objects are intersecting each other. Screenshot by Nick Lievendag 5: Merging Objects and Avoiding Intersections A 3D printer needs to know if and how you want to merge different objects together. As you saw in the previous step, things that look great from the outside might be a little messy inside the 3D model.

Luckily for us, there is a great free plugin for Cinema 4D that is really handy: Magic Merge. This plugin by Nitro4D can be downloaded here and should then be unzipped in the following folder: maxon/cinema4d/plugins. Save your design and restart Cinema 4D to continue. In case you “connected” parts before, make sure to disconnect them. Now select all separate objects, go to Plugins in the top menu and click on Magic Merge. Screenshot by Nick Lievendag. 6: Making your Model Watertight & Manifold Creating a design for 3D printing means that your Cinema 4D model has to be able to exist in the real world. This is where key geometry issues come into play. For example, your model needs to be watertight.

Ask yourself the question: if I were to put water inside my model, would it flow out? If that’s the case then you need to find those holes and close them. The design below is an example of a model that is not watertight. You can clearly see that there is a big gap in its surface.

Cinema-4d-watertight-manifold Luckily for us, Cinema 4D has a tool that shows us exactly where those holes are. You can identify issues with watertightness by using Mesh Checking. Open the Attribute Manager and then choose Mode – Modeling – Mesh Checking Tab. Enable “Mesh Check” and “Boundary Edges” and uncheck all other options. This will show you the “holes” in the mesh of your models, which keep them from being watertight. Cinema-4d-make-3d-printable Check if your model will be 3D printable. Next thing you should do is check the “Non Manifold” box.

This will highlight any unwanted extra faces or edges that might cause problems. Sometimes this extra geometry is hard to spot since it is located inside the model (see step 5 of this tutorial). 7: Wall Thickness – Making Sure Your Walls Are Printable In order to make your Cinema 4D model printable, you need to ensure that each and every surface of your model has a wall thickness. Without setting a wall thickness, a 3D printer has no information about how thick or how thin it is supposed to print your part.

The picture below shows a model with paper-thin surfaces (not printable, left) and a solid object with thick walls (printable, right). If you want to learn more about how thick your walls need to be exactly, make sure to read this blog post. Cinema-4d-wall-thickness A quick and easy way to add wall thickness is to select the Extrude Tool, choose a Maximum Angle of 91° and check the “Preserve Groups” and “Create Caps” options. If you have one enclosed object (let’s say a solid cube) without any holes, your ‘wall’ will simply be your entire model. In this case, you don’t need to assign any wall thicknesses as your entire 3D print will be solid inside. Cinema-4d-solid-object 8: Inverted Normals – Fixing Reversed Faces Another problem that can occur are so-called inward-facing or reversed faces. This means that a surface of your model is facing in the wrong direction (towards the inside of the object instead of the outside).

To fix this, visualize the normals by selecting the faces in Cinema 4D. Normals facing outwards will be shown in orange, whereas inverted normals will be shown in purple. Another way to find inverted normals is by selecting Options – Backface Culling. Inverted normals will then simply disappear from your view.

Alternatively, you can just select a specific face and choose “Reverse Normals”. 9: Exporting your Design as a 3D Printable File You made it! Now the last thing left for you to do is to save your model as a 3D printable file.

Simply go to File – Export and choose STL (the standard file format used in 3D printing). Select an export scale of 1 millimeter to ensure that your object has the same size as you determined in step 1 of this tutorial. This how-to article includes a tutorial video as well as a text version. About 3D Builder 3D Builder is a free Windows app that lets you view, capture, personalize, repair, and print 3D models. Users either start from scratch by combining simple shapes, or download any kind of given 3D file from an online database. They can then edit these models using the 3D modeling space. 3D Builder even includes a feature to turn webcam photos into 3D, as well as easy-to-use personalization tools.

The app supports all important 3D printing file formats including STL, OBJ, PLY, WRL (VRML), and 3MF files. Getting Started with 3D Builder As already pointed out you can either start from scratch or by importing existing models. 3D Builder gives you the following options: Choose ‘new model’ to start designing an object from scratch. Select ‘load model’ to open an existing model and start editing it.

Click on ‘load image’ to important an image and create a 3D model based on it (works best for images with high color contrast like a black object on a white background). Choose ‘camera’ to import a photo and turn it into a 3D model. Select ‘scan’ to import a scan based on Microsoft’s Kinect device. An easy starting point is to select a model from the library. You can browse through the different categories (like toys, trophies, household, miniatures, etc.) on the home screen and start editing them immediately.

Basic Settings and File Opening If you choose to create a ‘new model’ you will see an empty three dimensional workspace! This is where you will create your new object! But first, let’s get familiar with 3D Builder’s interface: On the right hand side you can choose options such as selecting objects, grouping them together, or changing the material.

On the top left of the screen you see the icon of the main menu. Click on it and select ‘settings’. Here you can choose the unit size that suits your needs best.

The most used unit size in 3D modeling and 3D printing is millimeters (mm). Next to the main menu you will see another menu that is called ‘insert’. From here you can add simple geometric shapes (like cubes, spheres, etc.) as well as previously created models.

Rotate: Click on your left mouse button and drag in order to rotate the view and see your object from different angles. Zoom: Use the wheel of your mouse to zoom in and out. Pad: Click on your right mouse button and drag in order to pad. Basic Editing Tools After selecting an object you will see several simple editing options at the bottom of your screen. Move: The first tool lets you move your parts in three dimensions by clicking and dragging one of the arrows.

You can also click on the number below and enter a precise value. Rotate: With the second tool you can rotate your parts in all directions by clicking and dragging one of the arrows. Once again, you can also insert a value here.

Scale: You can change the size of your model with the third tool. The little lock symbol shows that your model will be rescaled proportionally. If you only want to increase the size of your model in one dimension, uncheck the lock symbol first. 3d-builder-3d-modeling-edit Basic editing options can be found at the bottom of the screen. Intermediate Editing Tools But there’s more.

By clicking on the ‘Object’ menu at the top you will get further editing tools. Duplicate: The currently selected model will be copied and placed right next to the existing one. If you click on the copy, you will have selected both objects now.

Double click on one of them to only select one of the two. Delete: The currently selected model will be deleted. Center View: If you get lost on your workspace this option gets you back to the right camera angle. Mirror: This mirrors your model. Mirroring comes in handy if you need the left and right version of something. Settle: With this tool you can check the stability of your model. For example, it can show you if your future 3D print will stand upright or if it will fall over.

3d-builder-3d-modeling-duplicate The cube was copied with the duplication tool. Advanced Editing Tools Now that you know the basics let’s hop on to the more advanced editing tools. Click on the ‘Edit’ menu on the top to get here. Split: This lets you cut your object into two pieces. You can freely choose the angle and height in which the cut will take place. Merge: This tool is very helpful if you want to merge several items together to a single new object. Subtract: Instead of adding items together, you can also subtract them.

This way you will cut away the overlapping parts of two models. Intersect: This option will only show the overlapping areas of several items.

All other parts of these models will be cut away. Smooth: This tool turns edges into round corners. Click it several times to get an even smoother result. Simplify: This option reduces the amount of triangles of your 3D model and will thus lead to sharper edges. Emboss: This tool enables you to add text, signs or symbols to your 3D model. 3d-builder-3d-modeling-cut The cube will be cut in half with the split tool. Importing an Image As we already pointed out, you can also import images.

Click on ‘insert’ and select ‘image’ to do so. Try a black and white silhouette image for the best results. Click on ‘inverse’ to change between a positive and negative representation. Inside the Matrix Editor you can draw, erase, select and modify voxels.

Simply double-click the voxels or the bounding box of a matrix in order to enter it. Leave it by double-clicking on an empty area. Step 4: Drawing Tools Most tools can only be used inside the Matrix Editor. For all tools the status bar at the bottom offers valuable info on how to use them. If you move your mouse over a toolbar button, it will tell you the tool’s basic purpose.

Qubicle 3.0 offers 13 different tools to draw, erase and attach voxels: Pencil, Eraser, Attach and Paint Tool: The Pencil draws voxels, the Eraser deletes them, the Attach Tool attaches a new voxel to a side of an existing one and finally the Paint tool paints voxels – without creating new ones.
